I’ve had a whole bunch of requests to re-publish “A Tote-Board Lesson” and “Lesson On Betting With A New Teller” – both of these articles will increase your knowledge of horse racing and the art of making money.

A “Tote-Board” Lesson  - How To See The Inside Money

On any given day, sometimes you can make some money trying to see where the “Backside Money”, sometimes called “Barn Money”, is wagered.  When trainers feel that their horses are ready to run, the backside personnel place their wagers early because they are going to be real busy and do not have time to get to a window right before the race.  The “hot walkers”, the groomsmen, the training assistants, the jockeys, the jockey agents, the track crew, the owners and their families all know when their horse is ready.  They cannot hide it from me either, even though they did not bet with me, and I’m going to share that information with you right now.

Since it is very difficult to handicap first time starters, I use this method to find winners when there are a lot of first time starters running.  On Sunday, January 27th, 2008, there were 13 first time starters running in 3 different races – the 3rd, the 5th and the 7th races.  This makes it a little simpler to see where the “barn money” is placed.  I’m going to tell you how to make a lot of money, just by looking for “barn money”.

You have to be watching the “tote-board” (that great big green thing that shows all the odds” in front of the grandstand – or you can be watching a television – but you have to be watching when the race is first displayed.  This would be right after they declare a race official.  For instance, when the 6th race was declared official, and the first click of the tote board or 1st display appears for the next or 7th race.  You have to be pretty quick, because you’ve only got about 60 seconds to see the “barn money”.  I was in the break room when the 6th race was made official and I was looking for the “barn money” as I had done in the 3rd and 5th races without seeing anything.

Here’s how to do it – take your program and jot down the odds that you see in the left column, right next to the morning line.  Look at this chart:

# HORSE NAME                    ML           My Pencil Jot

  1 BIG DOG DADDY             15/1                       15/1
  2 NEXT BIG SECRET            8/1                        7/1           *
  3 CINNAMIST                      12/1                       14/1
  4 CIGAR BREAK                  2/1                        6/5
  5 GARY WITHA G                30/1                       99/1
  6 SOUTH SOLDIER               6/1                        5/1
  7 NO PASS                           5/1                       6/1
  8 LOOK OUT BELOW           10/1                      9/1
  9 KING O CLASS                  10/1                      8/1          *
 10 RUSHTOGREATNESS      8/1                         3/2           *
 11 EXPLOSIVE COLONY      12/1                        10/1         *

 12 BIG SCOOTER                 30/1                       99/1

* denotes first time starters

Win Total Pool                                    $2766

Study the above chart – it displays something that you can use to make a lot of money.  Notice that there was already $2766 wagered for “win” bets on the above horses at the 1st click of the tote board and the wagers for each horse divided into the total give you the current odds for each horse.  Notice the # 10 horse – the majority of the early wagering was on # 10 and this is mostly barn money that has been wagered at this point. There are a few early $2 bets, but again the majority of this money is from the backside.

What I look for is something above 5/1 that clicks off at below 2/1.  # 10 was the hidden horse with a morning line of 8/1 and a first click of 3/2.  The barn felt that “Rush Of Greatness” had a good chance to win the race, so good in fact that they had bet a lot of money early.

I looked at my picks which were 4-2-7-6 and I put $3 to Win/Place on # 10, and played a $2 Exacta with # 10 keyed over the 2-4-6-7, and a $1 Trifecta key 10/2-4-6-7.  This wager cost me $26 – I won $78.30 on my Win/Place bet and $286 on the Exacta wager – I had to throw away the Trifecta wager, but I made $338.30 profit on this little bit of knowledge and the guts to make the wager.

Try out my “Tote-board” System and you will profit from this free lesson.  This little bit of inside knowledge is included in my horse race ‘cappin system “The Perfect Speed Handicapping System”.

Here’s the official results chart of that race - # 10 won by a 4 lengths.

Lesson On Betting With A New Teller

On Thursday in the last week of April 2007, one of my regular customers could not get to my window just prior to the 7th race at Aqueduct because I was tied up with an IRS ticket, so he went to a very pretty girl who had been added to our line from the stand-by list.   He made his wager, watched the race as his $1 Trifecta Box 1-3-8 and $2 Exacta Box 1-3-8 won, watched the official payoffs hit the screen, then came to my window to cash his $2 Exacta for $498.50 and his IRS $1 Trifecta for $3,061.  I ran them both through and they both said “Not a Winner” – then, I noticed that the very pretty girl had given him his tickets not for Aqueduct, but for the 4th race at Oaklawn and all I could do was explain to him that he needs to go to a teller that is used to selling multi-track wagers, instead of going to a very pretty teller.  I also told him that he should always check his tickets, even when they are purchased from my window, because I can also make mistakes, but that ultimately it was his error.  I apologized, but nothing is going to make him feel better.

I feel very bad about what happened to this very fine gentleman, but once again, I urge each and every one of you to always go the a full time teller and always check your tickets before you leave the window or as soon as you can.  Also, it is wise to allow enough time to enable the teller to cancel wrong tickets.  If you run up to the window at the last minute, the teller has no chance to cancel a miscoded ticket, and you are only hurting yourself.  Also, you can’t expect wrong tickets to be eaten by the tellers (we have to pay for our mistakes) – they are your responsibility.

Jim’s Handicapping Systems

If you have been looking for that one "system" that you can use to make money at the race track or if you simply want to know more about the racing community, check out my "Cappin' Systems".  Both systems, "The Perfect Speed Handicapping System" for thoroughbreds and "Greyhounds - The Ultimate Speed Machines", are very clear and concise and I guarantee you will not be disappointed with either of my systems.  Prices are posted on the "Cappin' Systems" page.
